ZMER One VR 360 Sports Camera Review

The ZMER One VR 360 Sports Camera is a well constructed camera that makes shooting video and photo’s in 360 a breeze.

Were going to start this review by covering the pro’s that I found while using this product.

This camera boast a simple design. It features a shutter button on the handle, a shutter button on top of the camera, and a shutter button in the mobile app. All of which make it very easy to capture moments quickly and effortlessly. The video and photo quality could be described as good, not great but good enough to enjoy your captured moments. The mobile app provides additional features including filter effects, remote shutter control, file transfer from the camera to the app, and social media sharing. The battery last about 2 hours with continuous video recording. The bottom of the handle has a 1/4″ slot that allows you to mount the camera on a tripod. The product is packaged very well. The camera is housed in a sturdy formed foam which is housed by a thick sturdy box.

I had a couple of weeks to run this camera through several test scenarios from which I started finding several con’s.

Although the video and photo quality are descent enough to label it as good, the audio is very poor. The sound is muffled, not clear and even though the camera has two mic’s, you don’t get a sense of left and right audio space.

The handle turns out to be the battery for the camera which needs to be attached in order for the camera to function. This makes the camera not ideal for someone that might want to mount the camera on a helmet or on a motorcycle.

The camera can’t be used as a web cam therefore you won’t be able to use it for live broadcasting. The USB connection is only for charging which means that the USB cable can’t be used to transfer data from the camera to your computer.

The app offers a way to process and upload your video and photo files to Facebook, Twitter, and Weibo. The drawback is that the app uploads your files to a zmer website server then post’s a link to your chosen social media platform that points to the file on the zmer server. This method is not ideal and most would find it concerning to upload personal photo’s and video to a public accessible server.

The photo and video files are not saved with 360 metadata which means that you need to transfer your files to your computer and use a third party app such as Spatial Media Metadata Injector to add the metadata that hosting services need to recognize the files as 360 files. If you upload your files without the 360 metadata, hosting services will load them as regular flat images or flat video.

In summary, I think this camera is a hard sell. The price hovers around $400 which is a steep price to pay for a camera that needs additional processing to be able to share your photo’s and video to hosting services that support 360 media. The mobile app has some useful features but the sharing to social media function is less than ideal. Not having the ability to use this camera as a web cam for live 360 video broadcast further reduces the appeal of this device. Ultimately, the poor audio quality is a deal breaker. You would need to capture audio using another device to compensate for the poor audio quality that the camera produces thus adding to the processing of the files if you want to create good quality content.
